My Mom

I hadn’t planned on doing a Mother’s day post; because I assumed that most blogger’s out there would be doing one. I decided to go ahead and do a post about my mom, because everyone’s mother is special and my mom is no different.  As long as I can remember she has been there for me; when I needed a shoulder to cry on, someone to vent to, when I needed a hug.
We had some tough times when I was a preteen who thought I knew better and didn’t need my mom telling me what to do. The more I pushed her away the harder she hung on. I am thankful she did, because without her standing by me and her love I don’t know where I would be now.
My mom and I grew closer through my teenage years, when I realized mom did know what she was talking about; when she would tell me not to do something. Now as a twenty something college student my mom is by best friend.
Even though she worked/ (works) full time outside the home, she always managed to pick me up from school every day; from kindergarten till junior year when I started driving. She even made time to get me to soccer and softball practice, violin concerts, as well as girl scouts meetings.  She also never missed a school program or field trip when I was in Elementary school. She always came to our Thanksgiving lunch at school during our Elementary school days, even being one of the volunteers who helped serve the lunch.
My mom has made plenty of sacrifices though the years to make sure that my sister and I had the things we needed. There were plenty of times that she went without new clothes and shoes so that my sister and I could have new clothes and shoes for school. Now she is trying hard to help me pay for college, and I know that it is not easy for her and sometimes I feel guilty that she is still going without some of the things she wants so that I can attend college and have a better life than she had.
I know I don’t tell her near enough that I love her, but I do. She gave me life, even when it completely changed her life. She says it changed her life for the better. She has always been there for me, putting my sister’s and my needs above her own. I just hope that when I am a mom that I can be half the mom that she has been.  I know that having a child doesn’t make you a mom or dad. But being there for you child or children and putting them first; giving love, your time, nursing them when they are sick, helping heal their hurts makes you a mom. I know that I had the best mom. I love you mom.

Spring Break

This past week has been spring Break in the Bluegrass state for my sister. As a college student my spring break was in March, however after my class on Thursday morning my mom my sister and I hit the road to visit historical sites in the Bluegrass. Every since I was little spring break was used as a time to visit historical sites in Kentucky and the surrounding states.

This spring break was no different. This year we went to the “bluegrass area” of the state. Mostly Danville, while there we went to Constitution Square the birth place of Kentucky. However as a nursing student I actually like the McDowell house more. The home of Dr. Ephraim McDowell thanks to the surgery he performed on Jane Todd Crawford; he became known as the father abdominal surgery. Without his “experiment” we might not have the life saving surgeries that we have today.  I also learned that before he performed the surgery he wrote out a prayer and stuck it in his pocket, most doctor’s today don’t do that let alone pray before surgery. You can even see a copy of the pray at the museum house.

I know the dr. did a great surgery, but I for one want to know about Jane Todd Crawford. I know one thing if an author wanted to write a fictional story based on this event I know that I would read it, if it focused on Jane Todd Crawford as well.

Memorizing scripture

Starting this week; I am going to start memorizing scripture again. I have done this on regular bases since high school. In high school when I was memorizing scripture weekly and I had never felt closer to God, I miss the simple days of high school, when I was able to get what I called a weekly recharging section on Wednesday night service at Church. As a college student I do not have that option, because I have class and have to work on Wednesday.
However God didn’t leave me he stayed constant I am the one that drifted away. I realize now that it’s time for me to come back to the loving arms of my Heavenly Father.
To get me back in the habit of memorizing scripture I’ve decided to start with two verses from the Old Testament, a verse from Proverbs, and two verses from the New Testament
*      Ruth 1:16
*      Psalms 37:3-5
*      Proverbs 17:22
*      Philippians 4:11
*      Matthew 4:4
Memorizing scripture will have help keep up with my daily Bible reading as well. Starting in April I plan to read a Chapter of Proverbs a day, and two Chapters of Psalms a day. Along with a few verses from the book of John this is the book my life group is doing our Bible story on. Also along with a few verses a day from the Book that I’ve chosen to read for my walk. I know I can do this, I will do this.

Book review of Pearl in the sand

Title: Pearl in the Sand
Author: Tessa Afshar
            Pearl in the Sand is based on the Biblical story of Rahab, and Salmon(e), and the fall of Jericho. Since the Bible does not really say anything about Rahab’s life before the two spies make their way to her door. Or even after the fall of Jericho. Tessa Afshar had a little bit of poetic license in writing the novel. The author suggests that Rahab might have been sold in to prostitution at an early age by her father.
While Salmon(e) is a leader of the tribe of Judah. When Salmon(e) first meets Rahab he cannot see passed her past as a Zonah Hebrew word for prostitute however after a while the two fall in love. Even though the life of a Zonah wasn’t something that she chose, she still had to repent.  The healing process comes to Rahab because of pearl earring that had been left in the sand over night and almost destroyed; she realizes that she is still beautiful and treasured by God.  I wonder if that is why the author named the book Pearl in the sand.
How does a cannaite harlot find happiness, marriage, and love with a leader of Judah? Simple through God’s Grace. Pearl in the Sand is more than just a love story between Salmon(e) and Rahab. It more importantly a story of God’s Grace and Mercy, how with Faith and belief in God and Jesus the sins of the past are washed clean.
If you want to read more about Rahab you can read her story in Joshua in the Old testament, Hebrews, and Matthew in the New Testament. Joshua and Hebrews mention Rahab’s past it mentions her past covered with God’s Grace. Matthew includes her along with four other women.
Other fiction title about Rahab include Unashamed Francine Rivers, and Daughter of Deliverance Gilbert Morris

Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day
     Everything in the world seems to put the importance of being in a relationship on Valentine’s Day. So what’s a single girl to do? Trust God. Even for me that statement was hard to how on to let alone do. For me the last few years for me have been hard. This year however is easier to face as a single young woman, because I am trusting God with every aspect of my life and my future. Especially my dating life and my future husband whoever he may be. It’s in God’s hands. God’s timing is not my timing. God’s best for me is far better that anything I could come up with.
     This single season of my life is a time of waiting and preparation for what God has in plan for me, and it’s going to be good. The whole thing of trusting God with my dating life reminds me of something my eleventh grade Sunday school teachers use to say. “God will bring Mr. almost wonderful into your life, if it is His will for your life. He’ll be Mr. almost wonderful and not Mr. Perfect because only Jesus is perfect.”
     He’ll be Mr. almost wonderful, because he is only human. He will love God more than he loves me. He will treat me like a princess, because I am the daughter of the King of kings, and Lord of lords.
     So for now I am enjoying this season of singleness, and the love of my Heavenly Father. Waiting for God’s timing for God to bring my future husband, my prince into my life, when the time is right.
     There are a few Bible verses that I have been reading to help me grow during this season. Psalms 16, Psalms 40, as well as my life verse Psalms 37:3-4 I am thankful that my devotional this morning had the line that “if you’re single, remember that your value doesn’t come from having a ring on your finger but having Jesus in your heart.”
     Some Christian songs that I enjoy listening to during this season are:
     Wait for Me- Rebecca St. James
     Free to be Me-Francesca Battistelli
     My Paper heart- Francesca Battistelli
